Marbocin General Information

What is Marbocin used for?

Marbocin tablets 20mg are a veterinary-specific antibiotic medication used to treat most common bacterial infections in dogs in various parts of the body, caused by a wide range of susceptible bacteria.  Marbocin tablets 20mg are most commonly used for skin and soft tissue infections, including superficial skin infections (pyodermas), wounds and abscesses; also, secondary wound infections.  Marbocin tablets 20mg are also used for urinary tract infections.  Marbocin tablets at a dose of 20mg should only be used for dogs; a lower dose is required for cats.

How does Marbocin work?

Marbocin tablets 20mg contain marbofloxacin that belongs to the fluoroquinolones group of antibiotics and is a synthetic broad spectrum antibiotic with antibacterial activity against a wide range of bacteria including pseudomonas, staphylococcus, haemophilus, Enterobacter and E. coli.  Marbofloxacin in Marbocin tablets 20mg works by inhibiting specific bacterial enzymes (bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase) needed for the bacteria to replicate and repair its DNA.  This action of marbofloxacin in Marbocin tablets 20mg blocks bacterial growth and prevents the spread of infection.  Marbocin tablets 20mg are fast acting with long lasting effect, which enables once-daily dosing.  

What does Marbocin contain?

Marbocin tablets 20mg contain the active ingredient marbofloxacin a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat most common bacterial infections in dogs.

What are the side effects of Marbocin?

The most commonly reported side effects when taking Marbocin tablets 20mg include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, diarrhoea and lethargy.  Convulsions or seizures are a rare side effect in pets with CNS disorders.

When should Marbocin not be used?

You should not give Marbocin tablets 20mg to your dog if:

• Your dog is allergic to marbofloxacin or any ingredients in Marbocin
• your dog is pregnant or are lactating
• your dog is less than one year of age, large breeds of dog with a longer growth period under 18 months of age), as articular cartilage may be affected during the period of rapid growth
• your dog has kidney or liver disease or a central nervous system disorder
• your dog is taking medicines that interacts with Marbocin including sucralfate for stomach ulcers, antacids for indigestion, and mineral supplements that may reduce absorption of Marbocin, theophylline for respiratory problems may be affected by Marbocin.

How should Marbocin be taken?

You should give Marbocin tablets 20mg to your dog once daily with or without food, preferably at the same time each day.  The dose you give should be 2.75 mg/kg (1.25 mg/lb) based on the body weight of your dog.  Your veterinary professional may increase this to 5.5mg/kg (2.5 mg/lb).  You should continue to give Marbocin tablets 20mg to your dog for as long as recommended by your veterinary professional.  For skin infections should give Marbocin tablets 20mg to your dog 2-3 days after symptoms have gone for a maximum of 30 days.  For urinary tract infections you should give Marbocin tablets 20mg to your dog for up to 10 days but discontinue if there is no improvement after 5 days.  

How long should you give Marbocin?

You should continue to give Marbocin tablets 20mg to your dog for as long as recommended by your veterinary professional.  For skin infections should give Marbocin tablets 20mg to your dog 2-3 days after symptoms have gone for a maximum of 30 days.  For urinary tract infections you should give Marbocin tablets 20mg to your dog for up to 10 days but discontinue if there is no improvement after 5 days.

Missed dose of Marbocin

If you miss a dose of Marbocin tablets 20mg give it as soon as you remember, unless it is time to give the next dose, then skip the missed dose.  Do not give a double dose.

How should Marbocin be stored?
You should store your Marbocin tablets 20mg below 30°C in a cool dry place.
