General Information

What is Rebamipide used for?

Rebamipide is an anti-gastritis and anti-gastric ulcer drug used for mucosal protection, healing of peptic and gastroduodenal ulcers, and treatment of gastritis.

It is indicated during bleeding, erosion, redness, and oedema (all signs of gastric mucosal lesions) that occur in acute gastritis and acute exacerbation of chronic gastritis. Rebamipide is also an effective and safe drug in the treatment of recurrent oral ulcers in Behcet's disease. 

How does Rebamipide work?

Rebamipide is an amino acid derivative that works by enhancing the mucosal defence system and scavenging free radicals in the body.

When should Rebagen not be used?

Rebamipide is contraindicated in patients who are allergic to the drug.

What is the dosage of Rebamipide?

The usual adult dose for the drug is one 100 mg tablet three times daily, or as directed by your Doctor.
It can generally be taken with or without food.

How should Rebamipide be taken?

Rebamipide should be taken orally in three divided doses, in the morning, evening and before bedtime.

What are the warnings and precautions for Rebamipide?

• Since elderly patients may be physiologically more sensitive to this drug and more prone to gastrointestinal disorders than younger patients, take special care to when using the drug on them.

• Use the medication on pregnant or possibly pregnant women only if the anticipated therapeutic benefit is thought to outweigh any potential risk, as directed by your Doctor.

• Lactation should be avoided when using the medication.

What are the side effects of Rebamipide?

  Skin: Rash, pruritus, drug-eruption-like eczema
  Gastrointestinal: Constipation, bloating, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, heartburn, abdominal pain, belching, taste abnormality
  Others: Cold sweat, difficulty breathing

What are the other precautions for Rebamipide?

• Proceed immediately to the nearest emergency department if an allergic reaction occurs (difficulty in breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives).

• Patient should be closely monitored for leukopenia, thrombocytopenia and hepatic dysfunction.

What are the Drug Interactions of Rebamipide?

Rebamipide could interact with celecoxib or diclofenac.

What are the storage conditions for Rebamipide?

Rebamipide should be stored below 25°C.
