General Information

What is  Habitrol Mint Gum 2mg used for?

Habitrol Mint Gum 2mg is indicated for the relief of nicotine withdrawal symptoms in nicotine dependency, as an aid to smoking cessation. Habitrol Mint Gum 2mg may be used as part of a smoking reduction strategy by smokers who are unable or not ready to stop smoking abruptly, as a step towards stopping completely. Habitrol Mint Gum 2mg may be used by smokers who are unable or not ready to quit on occasions when temporary abstinence from smoking is desired.

How does Habitrol Mint Gum 2mg work?

Habitrol Mint Gum 2 mg is a nicotine replacement therapy (NRT).

  • As the gum is chewed slowly, it releases nicotine.
  • The nicotine is absorbed through the lining of your mouth into your bloodstream.
  • This replaces some of the nicotine previously obtained from cigarettes, helping reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms such as restlessness, irritability, and difficulty concentrating.
  • It delivers nicotine more slowly and at a lower level than smoking, without exposing you to cigarette smoke, tar, or carbon monoxide.

For best absorption, chew gum slowly until tingling then “park” it between your cheek and gum .Repeat for approximately 30 minutes.

What does Habitrol Mint Gum 2mg contain?

Each 2 mg piece of gum contains 2mg of nicotine.

What are the side effects of Habitrol Mint Gum 2mg?

Common effects can include irritation of the mouth or throat, hiccups, cough, nausea, indigestion, abdominal discomfort, headache, dizziness, and sleep disturbance. Some symptoms may also be related to nicotine withdrawal.

Stop using the product and seek urgent medical help for signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or difficulty breathing. Seek prompt advice for chest pain, marked palpitations, or severe or persistent symptoms.

When should Habitrol Mint Gum 2mg not be used?

  • Non-smokers.
  • Children under 12 years.
  • Anyone allergic to nicotine or any ingredient in the gum.

Seek advice before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding; aged 12–17 years; have recently had a heart attack or stroke; have worsening or uncontrolled angina, a serious irregular heartbeat, or uncontrolled high blood pressure; or have diabetes, an overactive thyroid, a phaeochromocytoma, severe liver or kidney disease, inflammation of the oesophagus, or a stomach/duodenal ulcer.

A healthcare professional can help balance the risks of NRT against continued smoking and review other medicines that may need adjustment when smoking stops.

What medications interact with Habitrol Mint Gum 2mg?

Habitrol Mint 2 mg Gum has few direct medicine interactions. The main issue is that stopping or reducing smoking removes chemicals in tobacco smoke that speed up the breakdown of some medicines. Their blood levels may then rise, even though nicotine itself is not responsible.

Medicines that may need closer monitoring or dose adjustment include:

  • Theophylline
  • Clozapine and olanzapine
  • Warfarin
  • Insulin and other diabetes medicines, because glucose control may change
  • Ropinirole
  • Some medicines for blood pressure or heart conditions, including propranolol and prazosin
  • Caffeine can also have a stronger effect after stopping smoking

Avoid combining Habitrol Gum with other nicotine products—such as nicotine patches, lozenges, sprays, vaping products, or cigarettes—unless a healthcare professional has recommended a specific combination. Too much nicotine may cause nausea, sweating, dizziness, headache, vomiting, or a fast or irregular heartbeat.

Tell your pharmacist or prescriber that you are stopping or reducing smoking, particularly if you take any of the medicines above. Do not change a prescribed medicine yourself.

How should Habitrol Mint Gum 2mg be taken and for how long?

Habitrol Mint 2 mg Gum is used when you feel the urge to smoke, rather than at fixed dose times.

  • Chew 1 piece of gum slowly when you feel the urge to smoke.
  • Chew the gum slowly until you notice a tingling or peppery taste.
  • Stop chewing and park the gum between your cheek and gum.
  • When the tingling fades chew a few more times.
  • Park it again and repeat
  • Continue for approximately 30 minutes, then discard.

The 2 mg strength is generally intended for people who smoke fewer than 20 cigarettes per day, or who have not succeeded with the 1 mg strength. Avoid acidic drinks such as coffee or soft drinks for 15 minutes before and during use. Follow the current pack instructions and seek advice before combining it with another nicotine product.

In general aim for a 12 week programme and gradually reduce the number of pieces as cravings decrease. Most people stop within 3- 6months.

Missed dose of Habitrol Mint Gum 2mg

  • Typically use 8-12 pieces per day
  • Chew only one piece at a time, no more than one per hour.
  • Do not exceed 20 pieces in 24 hours
  • If cravings remain difficult to control despite correct use, speak with a pharmacist or other healthcare professional.

How should Habitrol Mint Gum 2mg   be stored?

You should store your Habitrol Mint Gum below 25°C in a cool dry place.
