Viaderm KC general information

What is Viaderm KC used for?

Viaderm KC cream is used for the short-term treatment of superficial skin conditions (dermatoses), that have become or are at risk of becoming infected with a bacterial or fungal infection.  These conditions include dermatitis or inflammation of the skin that can be due to several factors, such as contact with a chemical or irritant (contact dermatitis); overactive sebaceous glands (seborrhoeic dermatitis); inherited predisposition or atopic tendency, which is called atopic dermatitis or eczema and includes infantile eczema.  Viaderm KC cream is also used to treat lichen simplex, also known as neurodermatitis, which is a form of dermatitis made worse by constant itching and scratching, and nummular (or discoid) eczema, usually caused by trauma to the skin following surgery, insect bite or parasitic infection.  Viaderm KC cream is also used to treat anogenital pruritis (anal and vulval itching) and psoriasis, an autoimmune skin condition characterised by a chronic scaly rash.  Viaderm KC cream helps relieve symptoms like itching, redness, dryness, crusting, scaling and discomfort common to many skin conditions, particularly where there is inflammation and where there is also the added complication of a bacterial and/or fungal (usually candida) infection.

How does Viaderm KC work?

Viaderm KC Cream contains a combination of the corticosteroid triamcinolone, the antibiotics neomycin and gramicidin, and the antifungal nystatin, that work together to treat inflammatory and infected skin conditions.  Triamcinolone in Viaderm KC Cream is a potent synthetic fluorinated corticosteroid with rapid anti-inflammatory, anti-pruritic (anti-itching) and anti-allergic properties.  It works by blocking the action of phospholipase A2, the first enzyme involved in the synthesis of prostaglandins and leukotrienes, which are hormone-like substances involved in the inflammatory process; also cyclooxygenase (COX 1 and COX 2), the enzymes specifically involved in prostaglandin production.  Triamcinolone in Viaderm KC Cream also blocks formation of other mediators of inflammation, like kinins, and histamine release which causes itching, and also modifies the body's immune response. Blocking the production of inflammatory chemicals prevents the swelling and redness characteristic of inflammation and the itching and rash formation that can happen as a result of inflammation.  Triamcinolone in Viaderm KC Cream also causes vasoconstriction (blood vessels contract), which constricts blood vessels that have become dilated (widened) and leaky, allowing other inflammatory cells into the skin to escalate the inflammatory response.  Neomycin in Viaderm KC Cream is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is commonly used in topical creams and is effective against a wide range of bacteria that cause skin infections.  It does not absorb into the skin but inhibits the spread of bacteria that cause infection of inflammatory skin disorders.  Neomycin in Viaderm KC Cream works by blocking the synthesis of essential proteins needed for the bacteria to survive and replicate, which kills the bacteria and prevents spread of infection.  Gramicidin in Viaderm KC Cream is a group of antibiotic peptides obtained from the soil bacterium Bacillus brevis that is used as a topical antibiotic for skin infections, usually in conjunction with neomycin.  It works by binding to the bacterial cell membrane, causing membrane disruption and leaking of the cell contents, and also blocks DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis, which leads to cell death.  Nystatin in Viaderm KC Cream is an antifungal that is active against a wide range of yeasts including yeast infections caused by the yeast candida.  It works by binding to ergosterol, an important component of the fungal cell membrane that is not found in animal cells, weakening the fungal cell membrane, and causing the cell contents to leak out, which kills the fungus.  Viaderm KC Cream helps relieve symptoms of inflammation and prevents spread of bacterial and fungal infections of the skin.
